The Scenes

In several of the films discussed in The Sound of Things to Come, sound plays an important part of the narrative. This is the case in Forbidden Planet (1956), Barbarella (1968), THX-1138 (1971), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Space is the Place (1974), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and Decoder (1984). In other cases, film imagery suggests the unusual sonic dimensions and innovations within a film, as we experience in Rocketship X-M (1950), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), The Thing from Another World (1951), and Blade Runner (1984). This gallery collects stills depicting some of these key sonic moments and sonorous objects.
